An old Morfitt photo album survived, but it bore no notes, and there is no one living to interpret it. However, a few of the photos are fairly self evident, and a little detective work helps:-
The above is almost certainly Alice Morfitt (nee Megson) with one of her sons, probably James (see the photo later we have allocated to James).
The only male pictures in the album are of the two sons, apart from this one. Either James Morfitt (senior) was averse to photography, or one of these is probably he. This is very much a stab in the dark. The photo is one of the oldest in the album as the military uniform bears out.
The above is pretty clearly of the six Morfitt Sisters, and Esther will be the youngest. As to identifying the others, their apparent ages should be compared against their dates of birth - no simple matter!
This lad appears quite often in the album, aging as he does so. We think he appears on Esther's Wedding photograph (1914), so he is probably either Fred or James. Balance of probability is that he is Fred (see below).
This lad is similarly dressed to the other one, and they seem to be a pair. This is clearly the same lad as the one with Alice Megson above. If the two lads are the brothers, and if the photos were taken at the same time, then this must be the younger of the two - James.

It would appear from Church records the name Morfitt was a variation of the original Yorkshire name of Moorfoot. Thomas's father Richard was born in Yorkshire as Moorfoot.
The change of name from Moorfoot to Morfitt is not difficult to understand if one bears in mind the degree of illiteracy in those days. The name changed when Richard Moorfoot moved from Yorkshire to Manchester (eventually to marry Mary Waring in Manchester who gave birth to Thomas). This was in the days of Parish records, and the Yorkshire churches had their way of spelling the name, and the Manchester another. After all, the cleric had to write it down from what the person providing the information told him, and he had to work phonetically. [D. Adams 2003)
