The Cromptons
There are two famously significant aspects to the Cromptons:
But before leaping into them it is essential to fix them into the genealogy. They flow from the Brierley Ancestry and we find that Cromptons become our ancestors with the marriage of Mary Crompton (b 1666/7) to Thomas Leigh. We have highlighted this with red on the Crompton genealogy that follows below.
At the outset, we said that we would only show Ancestor Genealogies. This is different - we have to show a Descendant Genealogy. Our earliest Crompton Ancestor is John Crompton (b 1541). It is five generations later that his descendants marry into the Leigh branch of our ancestry. Any descendant of any of our ancestors is a cousin of the umpteenth variety. So we have cast a Descendant Genealogy from John Crompton, but deleted all those on the Leigh side for clarity (otherwise we would unnecessarily include everything back to Adams, including all our other cousins!)
Whilst we were researching the Cromptons, we came across an entry in the 'Notable Americans' section of 'Burkes Peerage'. It referred to the to 'The Cromptons of Holcombe' (Holcombe is a little village near to Bury in Lancashire, England). The entry actually relates to George Crompton, so he too can be considered a family notable. He appears in the 10th Generation of the Genealogy following later. Here is the extract from 'Burkes'.
