Notes for Clifford Howarth Brierley:
There is confusion about the spelling of the middle name 'Haworth or Howarth'. On his birth certificate it is 'Haworth' and on his marriage and death certificates it is 'Howarth'. It was a common practice to give a child a middle name that was the surname of an ancestor - this was his grandmother's maiden name.
On 13th January (year not known) Taken to Dr. Bell (his GP) by his mother with suspected smallpox. Negative.
He worked for the 'Ministry of Transport' in some capacity that is now forgotten; however, he once told Duncan Adams that he had been 'Secretary to Lloyd George'. There is a photo of him on the disc at a meeting where Lloyd George is addressing a large audience - from his positioning in the photo, it would appear he is not just a member of the audience. However, he left this work and went into a different type of ministry and became a Congregationalist Minister. His Church was Richmond Street Congregational in Salford, which is now demolished.

Notes for Samuel Brierley:
No parents names were given for his christening which took place when he was an adult. Because of this, it is impossible to trace the Brierleys back any further.
It is interesting to speculate about Samuel's childhood. The absence of parents names, and the late christening suggest two things: firstly that he was illegitimate (no father), and secondly that his mother died in childbirth, or soon afterwards (no mother's name). Certainly, no one thought it appropriate to bother christening him. He must have had a harsh childhood and was probaly little more than a street urchin.
Add to that, the fact that the 'Great Plague' hit Britain in 1665 and lasted for around five years - it was raging when Samuel was a child. And we know that the Plague was in Salford because the road now known as 'Butterstile Lane' in Prestwich (where Samuel was) separated Salford from Prestwich, and the Prestwich people left Dairy produce 'on the stile', (hence 'Butterstile') and the Salford people left money in exchange - physical contact was too dangerous. It seems a miracle that Samuel survived. Perhaps that's why he decided to be christened later in life.
